An Austrian industrial design studio has released a high-end speaker dock for
iOS devices that's carved from a portion of a tree trunk. (Credit: KMKG
Studio)Most audiophiles know that wood is one of the best materials to make
hi-fi speakers with, but this new iPhone speaker dock certainly takes the
cake. The iTree is a speaker system for iOS devices that lives up to its name
--it's made using an actual portion of a tree trunk. However, instead of
cutting up the tree and creating a speaker out of wooden panels, the iTree is
a hollowed-out trunk with speaker cones and electronics installed right into
it. This slightly outrageous speaker dock was created by KMKG Studio, a design
house from Austria, in partnership with some notable hi-fi brands. The speaker
cones are from Trenner & Friedl while the in-built audio components--the
amplifier for instance--are from Arcam. While there aren't too many technical
details available, the iTree is rated to deliver a frequency range of 45 -
40,000Hz, which should give a satisfying musical experience. The speaker cones
